Wildlife and Turtle Conservation in Costa Rica
Program Category:
Wildlife and Conservation
Established in Limon, Costa Rica in 1989 with almost 200 acres of tropical forest and 6km of coastline, considered one of the most important nesting sites for leatherback sea turtles in the country. From March to July, every visitor is invited to join during the turtle census and witness at close range the nesting process - an unforgettable experience for all. From June to September, thousands of baby leatherback turtles hatch - another great spectacle of nature to behold. The reserve and the surrounding canals are rich in wildlife, with over 300 recorded species of animals, 3 species of monkeys, over 200 species of birds, and rarer species such as jaguar and ocelot.
This program is designed for
Every individual who wants to make a positive and meaningful impact on nature conservation.
Volunteer Responsibilities
Your responsibilities at this project may vary widely depending on the needs of the organization at the time of your visit. Responsibilities are going to be related to the natural regeneration of the forest and the effective protection of all species of animals and plants that inhabit the Reserve. One of the potential roles would be to help place markers on the beach for triangulation purposes. Volunteers may also be needed to participate in the cleaning of beaches, preparation work for the nursery garden (the site where they relocate nests that are endangered on the beach, for subsequent incubation and birth) and maintenance of the reserve building structure. Assistance may also be needed with environmental education for the community.
